Article Response #3 Beauty Work

Reading this article I was not really surprised by the fact that everyone in Hollywood movies is touched up. These are the impossible beauty standards which perpetuate other cosmetically centered industries, and which as women we are all aware of. What took me by surprise was the sheer amount of time and energy which goes into the process of cinema "touch ups". The figure of months to complete work on 600 frames was astounding. It seems unnecessary to me, especially for people who are already deemed the most beautiful in the world. Considering that the technologies used come from the same developers as ones used by engineers and structural it designers it seems like a waste of time and effort, but, you know, get money. Hearing that people used these services on home videos saddened me, it seems delusional to believe you must uphold that standard in your daily life, but I could not place myself in their shoes.

Alien Abduction

The Environment in My Composite

For my composite project, I'll be shooting as if I were filming a talk show. The simple composition will let the humans in the photo be the real focus. The sparse nature of the set should allow for that as well. The items on the desk will serve as a reflection of the interviewer. I hope to capture the uncomfortable nature of self-examination, or even of being examined by others.

Article Response #2 Fake News Edition

"Alternative Facts..."

As this article is a few months old, I didn't think it would really have an effect on my psyche. I was wrong. Rereading all the facts about what happened after President Trump's inauguration upset me just as much as, if not more, than earlier this year when the events were happening in real time. This article illustrates one piece in a web of deception whose target is the American people. It reminds me how important it is to look at different sources when it comes to news. We are blessed in this country to have freedom of speech and freedom of the press, so we must exercise those, and take care to study issues from all angles. Unfortunately, it is not good enough to take any one news outlet at it's word. Constant vigilance is key.

Homework #1 Article Responses

"My So- Called Opinions"

My first response to this article is one the author might refer to as typical of the millennial generation. "Ugh" "How can he say these things?" "Is he downplaying the success of generations of humanitarian efforts?" But, as I read on I found myself more in agreement. I do find opinion being a catalyst into argument in my friend group, especially when that opinion favors what is seen as patriarchal society. I agree that social media can be damaging in those realms because it pries out opinions before they are fully formed. Without a strong foundation of knowledge fruitful discourse is not possible. We see evidence of this every day on the internet, as arguments escalate at frightening levels. Though I feel this article has an overarching tone of condescension, I do believe it's contents have merit.

 "Song Dong"

I loved this idea right off the bat. I've often thought as a museum of myself, and my knick-knacking tendencies may be described as borderline hoarder. I also highly value the preservation of family and cultural history, so this installation was music to my ears. The description of the family history was intense, and made the piece that much more meaningful. I was deeply moved by the artists' dedication and love for his mother. I also appreciated the care with which his family moved the installation from space to space. The conclusion was bittersweet, but a poignant ending to the article. I know it must have brought his mother great joy to see this piece realized, and applauded. In the end, isn't that something we all aspire to?
